The Indoor Market Hall is currently closed due to the discovery of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) within the building structure. RAAC is a lightweight type of building material that was used between the 1950s and 1990s.
RAAC has been in the news recently because several schools across the UK, some social housing in Scotland, and various other buildings, have been found to contain RAAC.
Government advice is that these buildings must be closed immediately on health and safety grounds due to risk of collapse.
This is why it was necessary to act without prior notice to temporarily close Bury Market Hall.
The issues caused by the discovery of RAAC in the Indoor Market are wide ranging and can’t be solved quickly.
We acknowledge Bury Market is at the heart of the economic prosperity of the Borough, and we want to ensure that we consider the best way forward to secure the future of the market.
