Important information about the Indoor Market Hall 

The Indoor Market Hall is currently closed due to the discovery of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) within the building structure. 

  • The outdoor market and fish and meat hall are unaffected and are open for business as usual.
  • Katsouris and all the stores around the outer edge of the Market Hall are trading from their usual locations.
  • Most other Market Hall traders have been relocated close by to the Outdoor Market, Princess Parade, or in the Mill Gate Centre.
  • A support fund has been set up to help Market Hall traders to continue trading.

In November 1968 a fire devastated Bury's Market Hall and the building was razed to the ground, but this did not stop trading. Outdoor traders gave up parts of their stalls to indoor traders demonstrating camaraderie by everyone.

A new temporary Market Hall was built at a cost of around £30,000 and opened in March 1969 then on 6 October 1971, the new Bury Market site opened.

The New Market Hall, described as one of the best equipped and most architecturally striking market halls in the north-west with its 'bird-wing' roof, and Open Market were built at an estimated cost of £900,000. It is this magnificent hall that is still the home of the indoor market's 60 stalls which offer a wide variety of goods and services including; giftware, hardware, linens, haberdashery, clothing, electrical goods, food, hairdressing, manicures, shoe repairs, key cutting - we could go on!

The building is easily accessible from all areas of the Market having five entrances located on four sides and it is here that the Market's toilet and baby changing facilities are housed along with a free to use Cash Machine which is conveniently located in the entrance facing the Fish and Meat Hall.

In the unlikely event you can't find what you want in the Market Hall it is attached to the Mill Gate Shopping Centre which provides you with access to a further 140 shops and stores. Also within walking distance is the Rock Retail and Leisure Development.
